Worship Ministries
At St. Mary’s, worship is at the heart of everything we do as a faith community and grounded in the rich, liturgical tradition of the Episcopal Church and The Book of Common Prayer. Below, you will find a list of the many ways our parishioners serve each week in worship. If you would like to volunteer to serve in any of these roles, please contact the Parish Office.
LECTORS
Lectors read the lessons from Scripture during worship and lead the Prayers of the People. Typically, three lectors are assigned each Sunday—two for the readings and one intercessor to the lead the prayers.
ACOLYTES
Children and youth acolytes serve as torch bearers and crucifers during worship. Their primary responsibility is to lead the processions during the service. On special occasions, additional acolytes are used to carry other liturgical items during the procession, such as the thurible for incense and the Gospel Book.
CHALICE BEARERS
Chalice Bearers help administer the sacrament during Holy Communion. They also assist the priest in setting the Altar for Communion during the Offertory. Typically, two chalice bearers are assigned each Sunday and for special services throughout the year.
USHERS
Two ushers are assigned each Sunday to greet parishioners and guests as they arrive and to distribute worship bulletins. Ushers also help to ensure a safe experience of worship for everyone and to assist the congregation during the ministration of Holy Communion.
ALTAR GUILD
The Altar Guild is responsible for ensuring that the Altar and worship space are prepared for services throughout the week and for special services throughout the year, such as Christmas and Holy Week. They clean the linens and vessels for Communion, set the Altar, order worship supplies, and assist the priest in making sure that everything is prepared for worship.
ST. MARY’S CHOIR
Under the direction of our Organist/Choirmaster, John Beasley, the members of the choir at St. Mary’s serve as the musical leaders of the congregation. They help lead the hymns and prepare special selections for the Offertory on Sunday mornings. From time to time, they prepare for special services, such as Choral Evensong, Advent Lessons and Carols, and our yearly Festival of Hymns. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30, and anyone who loves to sing is welcome to join.
